Model Profit Calculations
A explanation on how model calculations are generated.
The model profit calculation is the foundation that many of our decisions around selling 3d printed products are built on. If you don’t get your pricing right you can potentially kiss goodbye any profit you had hoped to make.
Below we’ll break down the formulas used to generate the different elements of the profit formula as well as the final start to finish formula.
Revenue Calculation
SalePrice - Discount
The sales price and discount rates are generated using the inputs either in the model detail page or on the main model database page. Based on these inputs a value will be created known as the “Discount Price” which is what all the platform fees are generated from.

Platform Fees
The rates each platform charges are different. If a platform connection is supported through 3DPF and you connect your 3DPF account to said platform the rates will be entered for you (ie. Etsy). Otherwise you can also add or change the fee scheduled in the Selling Costs > Sales Platforms.

Cost Of Goods Sold
Material, Electric, Maintenance, Model Supplies & Labor are all calculated at the time of model input. Its uses factor such as Filament used, Print time, etc.
Packaging cost is pulled from the shipping profile you linked to this model when creating it.

Shipping Costs
The final piece to the profit equation is your cost to shipping the sold product. At the time of sale you charged your buyer for shipping. In our example above it was $5.75. However we can see in our shipping profile below that our Shipping Cost is only $4.28. This means that earned an extra $1.47.

Depending on what you charge your buyer this number could be positive or negative. In the profit calculations below you will see we either add this gain or subtract the loss from the final profit equation.
